Background:
After successful completion of the project “Mahabahu Brahmaputra River Heritage Centre’ (MBRHC) at Panbazar, Guwahati, Govt. of Assam planned to develop the entire Riverfront in the South bank of the river Brahmaputra from the MBRHC to the south bank terminal of the Guwahati Ropeway in phases. The works on this plan started with taking over the erstwhile Commissioner of Police residence which is located just beside the MBRHC and works to integrate the said premise with the MBRHC commenced on the ground from 29-12-2022.

While designing the project the following sustainable features are taken into consideration:

Ecological restoration: Revitalization of the lily pond and creation of a new river edge to enhance the natural habitat and promote biodiversity.

Groundwater recharge: Use of cascading paved terraces, gabions and recharge pits to provide structural support, increase biomass, enrich the soil and support the growth of riparian vegetation.

Revitalization of flora and fauna: Planting over 200,000 m2 with trees and shrubs to revitalize native species, preserve local flora and attract native fauna.

Sustainable infrastructure: The use of durable granite paving provides long-lasting infrastructure with low maintenance reduces environmental impact and promotes resource efficiency for a sustainable project.

Botanical Garden as an Open Gallery: The Botanical Garden is designed as an open gallery to promote awareness of plant diversity and encourage public engagement and education.

Reshaping for recreation: Transforming land into curved plazas and recreational spaces as a sustainable urban design approach that benefits tourists and residents alike.

Encourage public interaction: Connect the site to a local history museum to encourage community engagement with cultural and historical elements.
