Background:

Botanical Garden at Old Jail land, Fancy Bazar, Guwahati is an urban park infrastructure which serves as a green lung in the Centre of a densely populated area. The Jail land which housed a Jail in Britishers time had been a neglected piece of land, being used for dumping for many years, having extremely poor soil condition, bad water quality, house to weeds and many wild species. An Ancient temple, Lotus Pond and a Waterbody on Southern side of old jail land premises are the existing features of this land. Currently Botanical Garden has green spaces of 11.77 Acres with 2.58 Acres rejuvenated water bodies. It is house to over 230 sustainable botanical species which are climate tolerant. Over 85000 plants including trees, shrubs, climbers ground covers, bonsai, bamboo, palm have been planted inside the Botanical Garden. Further, a small Arboretum of 2.08 Acres houses species of special nature of flowers, herbs and medicinal plants. The garden is designed to attract both tourists and local residents. The journey starts with the Visitors Centre that displays content on botanical richness of the park. The park has a jogging track of about 2.5 kms, garden spaces, yoga corner, lotus pond and a South Pond rejuvenated from a stale body to a wet land that attracts birds. With Due respect to the history of land a Jail memorial has been built. A small corner for children has been created. The garden is equipped with full area surveillance, AV room, general ambient audio, signage’s with map, plant guide, resting spaces etc. Garden sustainability is enhanced by the fact that it is net zero in terms of water disposal and recycles all organic solid waste.
